So after taking it all in about Obama’s announcement today, I think I can finally express what I think.
At this point, these are still words. This is just an expansion of prosecutorial discretion and we know its been a failure for the undocumented community. Talk is cheap and we need action. I don’t like seeing my friends, family and my community all excited, have their hopes up to then be crushed. These are people, they have feelings and its unacceptable for them to play with people’s lives.
Also, I know lots of people are out celebrating, they’re excited and they feel this is a victory. As an ally to the movement, I am no one to tell people that they can’t celebrate. However, I feel its important people be critical and recognize that an announcement will not suffice.
We’ve had plenty of announcements, Prosecutorial Discretion and the Morton Memo. Both were allegedly about not deporting low priority immigrants, etc. Let’s be real here, we know that ICE are assholes and they’re going to do whatever they want. Because of the history of these announcements in the past, the nature of ICE, we know that this whole thing with work permits isn’t going to come easy even if people do meet all the requirements. They’re going to find someway to make it hard for people to get anything.
So until I see action, until I see relief for the undocumented community, until Obama keeps his word instead of giving #ObamaPromises, then I’ll give him some credibility. Because right now, we still have many people facing deportations and that speaks to me at this point. So we still need an executive order. But, I definitely hope I’m wrong as fuck and end up looking stupid, I really do. I hope that these aren’t just words.
